How much does it cost to publish with KP?
Absolutely nothing. KP does not believe authors should pay to be published. KP does not publish all submissions, either. If your work is accepted, you will receive a contract.
Are sales guaranteed?
No, sales are not guaranteed. The opportunity for sales is guaranteed, but not even the most well-known author can be guaranteed sales.
How much do authors earn?
KP is a very generous publisher. We offer 50 percent of net royalties. Transaction fees, such as from Paypal are deducted from the total sales and the author receives 50 percent of that. Paypal transaction fees are very minimal, about .33 cents per book. As stated in our contract:
Royalties shall be paid to the Author as follows:
A. A royalty of fifty percent (50%) of the Publisher's net revenues for paper copies sold of the Work. A royalty of fifty percent (50%) of the Publisher’s net revenues for copies sold through the Publisher’s Bookstore. A royalty of fifty percent (50%) of the Publisher’s net revenues for electronic copies sold of the Work via other sales outlets (Amazon, Kobo, etc.).
Who keeps the rights to my book?
You, the author retain your author rights while KP gets publishing rights. As you can see from our contract:
1. Grant of Publishing Rights
A. The Author hereby grants and assigns to the Publisher, its successors, representatives, and assigns, the sole and exclusive right to publish (i.e., print, publish, and sell) the Work in the English language in all forms in the United States of America, its territories and dependencies, and Canada, during the full term of copyright and any renewals and extensions thereof, except as provided herein.
B. The Publisher shall have the sole and exclusive right to publish or to license the Work for publication in the English language or in any other language in the United Kingdom and in any other foreign country, except as provided herein.
Can I copyright my own work?
Yes. KP suggests copyrighting your work before you start sending it out for consideration of publication with any company.
What kind of books do you publish?
We publish many different genres including science fiction, fantasy, horror, romance, mystery/suspense, DIY (do-it-yourself), historical, memoirs, crime novels, paranormal/supernatural, Christian and more.
What do you not publish?
Currently we do not publish children’s books, YA (young adult), poetry, screen plays, gay romance or erotica.
Why don’t you accept gay romance or erotica?
As a publisher, and because we absorb all costs for publishing, we choose which genres we will publish. Kellan Publishing is somewhat represented by what types of stories we publish and therefore we choose not to publish gay romance, erotica, graphical or pornographic material. It is not a political statement, but rather a business perception decision.
Do you accept previously published works?
No. We publish new, creative, and unique unpublished works. Per our contract:
3. Author's Warranties and Indemnity
A. The Author warrants to the Publisher and its licensees that he/ she is the sole Author and proprietor of the Work; that the Work has not heretofore been published in book form; that he/she is the owner of all the rights granted to the Publisher, and has full power to enter into this agreement, and that said rights are not subject to any proper agreement, lien, or other claim or rights which may interfere with the rights herein granted; that the Work is original and not in the public domain; that it does not violate the right of privacy of any person; that it contains no libelous, obscene, or other unlawful matter; and that it does not infringe upon the copyright or violate any other right of any person or party. The Author agrees to hold the Publisher harmless against any damages, including attorney's fees, finally sustained in any suit involving the Publisher or its licensees by reason of a violation of any of these warranties.
Do you publish print books?
KP publishes in several different formats including eBook, Mobi/Kindle, PDF and print. Currently our print books are POD (print on demand). Customers are able to choose which format they prefer when they purchase a book.
Do you only publish novels?
No, we publish novels, novellas and the occassional novellette to go into our collectable books. Novels are 50,000 plus words. Novellas are 25,000 to 50,000 words. Novelettes are 12,000 to 25,000 words. Many of the novelettes end up in our collaborative/collectible books which consist of 4 or more short stories based on the same theme.
How do I get paid?
Currently authors are
only paid via Paypal, as stated in our contract:
14. Statements & Payments
A. Royalty and/or affiliate payments will be made on a quarterly basis provided the earnings have reached or exceeded twenty-five dollars ($25). After three (3) year of original publication date, if the Author has not earned at least or exceeded earnings of twenty-five dollars ($25), the amount earned will be paid to the Author at the end of the contract. The contract may then be terminated due to its natural time ending or renewed in writing by both parties.
B. Payments are made via PayPal unless other arrangements have been made.
Do I have to pay for my book cover design?
No. KP designs the book covers at no cost; however, if you would like to design your own cover that is up to you. All book covers must be approved. Book cover designs by KP do not become the author’s. As stated in our contract:
F. All artwork, illustrations, designs, cover designs and any other graphics and visual material provided by the publisher will remain the sole property and complete and full rights belonging to that of the publisher. Should the author seek other publishing options, the artwork, illustrations, designs, cover designs and other graphics cannot be used. The author and publisher may come to a mutual agreement to sell the rights to the visual material to the author if both parties agree.
How long is the contract term?
Our contracts are for three years and can be renewed by both parties at the end of the contract. When the contract ends, and no agreement for renewal has been made, all publishing rights are returned to the author. As stated in KP’s publishing contract:
5. Termination & Reversion of Rights
A. At any time after three (3) years from the date of first publication, but not before, the Publisher may on three (3) months' notice in writing to the Author or his/her representative discontinue publication, and in that event, this agreement shall terminate and all rights hereunder shall revert to the Author at the expiration of said three (3) month period except as limited by this document.
C. The Work shall be considered in print if it is on sale by the Publisher or under license granted by the Publisher as provided herein, or if any contract for its publication, granted by the Publisher, is outstanding. In case of delays from causes beyond the control of the Publisher, the period shall be extended to cover such delays.
E. In the event of termination of this agreement, the rights herein granted to the Publisher shall revert to the Author. Termination of this agreement shall not deprive the Publisher of the right to receive its share of sums due from licenses or contracts granted by the Publisher prior to termination nor relieve Publisher of the obligation to pay to the Author royalties due on such sums.
How is marketing handled?
KP works tirelessly at marketing for all of their books, but authors are also required to market their work as well. As stated in our contract:
C. The Author will work with the Publisher and on his/her own to assist in marketing their works. The Publisher will exhaust all avenues of marketing and publicity for the Work; however, it is also the responsibility of the Author to diligently and exhaustively work on publicity and marketing for their Work. The Author agrees to use the marketing techniques set forth in the marketing guide and to not seek out any other avenues not set forth in the marketing guide without advance written permission of the Publisher.
Why go with KP instead of self-publishing?
Unless you have a lot of time and resources on your hands, self-publishing is hard to do. It takes a lot of time to promote your book. With KP, not only are we promoting your book, but the other authors of KP are as well. KP authors are not just a contract – they are part of a community, part of the KP family. This is where we differ from a lot of other publishing houses. When we say we are a community of authors and readers, we mean it.
Can I still publish outside of KP?
As long as you are not trying to publish works you have a contract with KP, you are free to do as you like. Only the contracted works with KP are subject to ‘competing works'.
11. Competing Works
The Author agrees that during the existence of this Contract, Author will not prepare or cause to be prepared or published in Author’s name or otherwise, any work that shall interfere with or injure the sale or distribution of the Work herein specified.
Okay, I’m ready. How do I get started?
